Like images of Nike's Rise Above Campaign we saw in the olympics, Adidas rebounds with "The Return " through social media channels that surprised the competition enough to get everyone's attention if you're a basketball fan or not! These well-produced min-series documentary-like videos were seen via You Tube, Twitter, and other avenues of e-marketing. They allow the fans to walk through his ups and downs, and see how he recovered first-hand with rehabilitation for his knee. This marketing strategy is smart because they keep Derrick Rose in the spot-light, allowing him to be executive producer of the clips and in the minds eyes to the fans. Now that the third video was released , we can look back and see a trend line that reached several impressive spikes the last month of this Summer. A whooping 45,000 mentions of "The Return,' says Marketing Cloud insights. This ability to generate excitement when a new shoe from Adidas is being released is a significant challenge that was contributed to the tweet from Derrick Rose, and the many retweets that came about on the 5th, the 10th and the 13th. Then on September 19, 2012 the third-cliff hanger video got well over 2,600 conversations, and with our ability to do web analytics we see how progressive the marketing campaign has been. Then three days ago on the 24th 3,500 of 5,000 were accounted for the new commercial Rose did for the release of the new sneaker by Adidas. We demographically tally that 25-34 to be having most of the conversations, 21-24 next highest, and 35-44 the third most popular age for "Adidas/Derrick Rose Talk." He won in being the head of the popularity in receiving 11,000 more retweets than Adidas twitter handle that is in second, and Chicago Bulls offical twitter account with 2,100 in third. Now watch the third episode with me! Sandi Jones

Adidas seeking more control of distribution
Unfortunately for all of us amazon fanatics, effective January, 2013 Adidas will no longer have their products listed on sites such as Amazon and eBay. The change stems from hope of gaining more control over how the brand is marketed, sold, and distributed through the online platform. Adidas reps said that the company is trying to ensure that Adidas and Reebok brands are "presented in the right environment at all times." A fear for many designer retailers and their consumers is the risk of fake products being sold online. Adidas intends to relieve consumers of these fears by restricting certain sites. They also wish to become more prominent as a fashion label as opposed to only being known as a sports brand.

How will you be affected by the change? Do you as a consumer only shop through brand sites, or do you run the risk and try to find deals on Amazon and eBay?

Episode two: Derrick Rose/Adidas
Adidas Under Pressure
Adidas is feeling the pressure from both Cornell
University and Reebok.
On October 1, 2012, Cornell University is terminating their eight-year contract with Adidas due to labor rights issues that affected 2,800 factory workers, in Indonesia. In April of 2011, the Adidas factory unexpectedly closed it's doors and laid-off workers, but they have yet to pay the legally-owed $1.8 million in severance. The yearlong student protest at Cornell University successfully ended with the termination of the Adidas contract and now Cornell students await Adidas response.
Subhinder Prem |
In addition to issues with Cornell University, Adidas is facing declining sales with it's Reebok segment, as well as trouble with it's Reebok India division. Adidas bought Reebok in 2005 and with this new segment, Adidas was able to more fiercely compete with it's rival, Nike. Unfortunately, seven years later, Adidas is now experiencing a downward slope solely with Reebok sales; Reebok sales fell 26% in this years second quarter. Furthermore both manager and chief of operations for Reebok India, Subhinder Prem and Vishnu Bhagat, were arrested for fraud (by means of creating fictive sales and manipulating company accounts) this past Thursday.
Adidas has yet to make any public statements in regards to Cornell University or it's issues with Reebok. Please check back, I will keep you posted on all updates.

Nicki Minaj "Originals" commercial
Nicki Minaj is serving as a BRAND AMBASSADOR for Adidas Originals?? Has anyone seen this commercial that just launched a couple weeks ago featuring Nicki and a wildy awesome pair of Adidas Originals? When I first saw this last week I recall thinking that while I'm not too fond of the girl, she might as well have her picture in the dictionary next to the word 'Original.' Nicki is unique, wild, and all over the media. All personal opinions aside, good thinking Adidas.
Check the full version of the commercial out for yourself!
Below is a closer pic of the Adidas she wore for the shoot. Crazy!

Impossible Is Nothing
All throughout my childhood I remember seeing Adidas shoes around school. The shoes were always white, rounded tip, with three recognizable black stripes. I knew nothing about the brand and had never seen an Adidas shoe that looked any different than the rest, but I knew what they were and I could spot them anywhere. Since then, the Adidas brand has greatly expanded upon their styles and color assortments. However, Adidas is far more than a successful brand of shoes.
Adidas is a lifestyle, and a way of being.
While doing research on the Adidas brand itself, I came across their campaign "Impossible is Nothing" that launched in 2007. Adidas sought to enourage the public to reach their own personal "impossible." They employed the likes of professional athletes from around the world to tell their stories. This campaign helped Adidas connect to consumers and inspire people around the world. Posted beneath is a print ad from the "Impossible is Nothing" campaign. Are you inspired?

Shoe History Pt 2
Adidas was brought to life in Germany 1924 through the creative minds of the Dassler brothers. The signature three stripes were initially designed for foot support but soon became the company's logo. The Adidas shoe made a name for itself during the 1928 Summer Olympics and was taken to another level during the early 1980's when the hip-hop group Run-D.M.C released the hit song about the popular shoe entitled "My Adidas." The trio rap group rocked the kicks without laces and the tongue outside the shoe as a way of refusing to conform to pop standards and instead embrace street wear. Run-D.M.C increased Adidas' sales and was the first hip-hop artist/group to sign an advertisement deal with a major corporation. Since the 80's Adidas-Run-D.M.C era, Adidas foot wear became a popular component to youth fashion and as of today, is worn as casual footwear.
Below is a photo of the famous shoe "Superstar" that hip-hop group Run-D.M.C made famous in their hit song "My Adidas." I remember rocking my Superstar 2 by dressing them up with a jean-skirt or cool and casual with my green Adidas sports jacket. What personal style did you create by rocking a pair of retro-Adidas?
